'Mach Squared ' is a major joint exhibition by brothers David Mach HRSA and Robert Mach at Tighnabruaich Gallery. Known for their bold, playful and deeply human approach to making, the brothers share a lifelong creative dialogue that stretches from Fife to the international stage. Bringing their work together in Argyll for the first time, this exhibition fills the gallery with energy, humour and reflection.
David, a Royal Academician, is celebrated for bold, large-scale sculptures and installations made from everyday objects and materials. His many well-loved public works across the UK have established him as a leading figure in contemporary British art, while his ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary has earned him international recognition.
Visitors can expect large-scale sculpture, collage and mixed-media works exploring identity, pop culture and the stories we tell about ourselves. Together, the brothers push the boundaries of material and meaning, from Robert’s intricate constructions to David’s iconic assemblages and installations.
After working alongside his brother for more than 20 years, Robert has spent the past decade forging his own artistic career. He is best known for works made from familiar materials, especially confectionery foil, including the iconic Tunnock’s Teacake wrapper. His practice explores the textures, associations and possibilities of the everyday world.
Mach Squared is a celebration of making, connection and family, and forms part of the RSA200: Celebrating Together anniversary programme honouring Scotland’s creative past and future.
This will be the brothers’ fourth joint exhibition and includes a number of collaborative works, among them a striking larger-than-life cheetah and a powerful stag created especially for the show, each brought to life with the unmistakable energy and inventiveness of the Mach style. Rarely seen together in this way, their work offers a vivid encounter with two distinctive practices shaped by shared roots, humour and imagination.
