Biography

Kirstin Mackinnon is a Scottish artist who makes figurative oil paintings about connection and the position of women in art and society.  Her emotionally direct paintings are personal yet speak to universal human experience.

Mackinnon graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) in 2023.  She was selected for the Royal Scottish Academy’s New Contemporaries exhibition and reached the semi-final on Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year in 2024.  Her work is held in nationally significant public collections including Surgeons’ Hall Museums and University of Dundee Museums.  In 2026, she was shortlisted for the Scottish Portrait Awards and the Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award.

Mackinnon’s practice continues to challenge societal expectations placed on women.  Her writing on gender equality in art was published by Boom Publications and Art UK.  She has spoken at events for the Scottish Society for Art History and DJCAD.

Her first solo exhibition will be held at The Smith Gallery, Stirling, in January 2027.
