Overview

Pushing boundaries between chaos and control.

My work begins with place. Specifically, a place for which I have a great deal of admiration and respect. This landscape, as I have come to know it, provides a foundation for these works.

Working across painting, drawing, printmaking, and photography, I explore this relationship through several ways of looking and making. I often work on old maps and weathered surfaces, allowing the histories already
embedded within the material to carry into the work. Through this, I am interested in creating works that feel found rather than made. Marks and inconsistencies within printed surfaces become anchors for intuitive
drawings, allowing forms to emerge from the original image.

Alongside these processes, smaller representational paintings turn attention towards quiet, easily overlooked encounters, finding beauty within them.

Inspired by prolonged observation, transformation, and the grotesque, Innes seeks to make the unnoticed visible and meaningful.

Biography

Innes MacLellan is a Scottish artist based in Bridge of Orchy, working across painting, drawing, printmaking and photography.

His practice is informed by his relationship with the Scottish landscape and an upbringing closely connected to the Highlands and its wildlife.

MacLellan graduated with a First-Class BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Gray’s School of Art in 2025, where he received the James Rust Prize and the Contextual and Critical Studies Dissertation Award. His work has been exhibited across Scotland, including with the Royal Scottish Academy, Tighnabruaich Gallery and the Glasgow Gallery of Photography. He has also undertaken residencies at Tighnabruaich and Kilmartin Castle.

He currently works from his studio in the West Highlands, continuing to develop a multidisciplinary practice concerned with place, observation, and the natural world.
