As the artist’s longest-serving shoes shown in her collection, this work emphasises how she has worn them through enough different versions of herself that they feel less like an item of clothing and more like a record of who she has been, and perhaps continues to be, as these shoes have not left her wardrobe. The red carpet and lipstick mark bring an element of glamour to something otherwise ordinary - because sometimes the things we wear every day end up carrying much more of us than we realise. The presence of polka dots will always be eye-catching. Simply put, the works celebrates the famous rhetorical question; why fit in when you were born to stand out?!
